Durga Puja : Learn All about The Bengali Tradtion
Durga Puja is worshiping Durga. And it is a Bengali holiday. It is usually in october which is why I posted it now. It has actually just ened yesterday.
The Bengali Belief
http://www.durga-puja.org/the-bengalee-belief.html
The beautiful Bengali decoration surrounding the majestic warrior.
Sati, the consort of Shiva was the daughter of Daksha Prajaapati a descendant of Bhrama. Sati had married Shiva against the wishes of her father. Daksha was sponsoring a sacrifice and attendees came from various parts of the universe. He invited all of the gods and goddesses except his son in law Shiva. Against Shiva's wishes, Sati attended this sacrifice and was insulted by her father. Unable to bear this insult, Sati immolated herself.
Enraged at the insult and the injury, Shiva destroyed Daksha's sacrifice, cut off Daksha's head and when pleaded by other gods, replaced it with that of a goat and restored him to life. Still berserk with grief, he picked up the remains of Sati's body, and danced the dance of destruction throughout the Universe. The other gods intervened to stop this dance, and the disk of Vishnu cut through the corpse of Sati, whose various parts of the body fell at several spots all through the Indian subcontinent and formed the sites of what are known as Shakti Peethas today.
Shiva was finally pacified when the last piece fell off from his shoulder. Narayana revived sati as Uma for a new life. Ever since peace was restored, Uma, with her children, Ganesh and Kartick, and with her two 'sakhis' - Jaya and Bijaya, comes to visit her parent's home each year during the season of 'Sharat' or autumn when Durga Puja is celebrated.
The rituals Of Durga Puja
The festival of Durga Puja starts with Mahalaya, the first phase of the waxing moon in Aswin. Thousands offer prayers to their ancestors at the city's river banks, a ritual called Tarpan. The inauguration of the Goddess idol starts on Mahashasthi. The main puja is for three days - Mahasaptami, Mahaastami, Mahanavami. The puja rituals are long and very detailed and complicated. Three days of Mantras and Shlokas and Arati and offerings - needs an expert priest to do this kind of Puja. Because of these facts, the number of Pujas held in the family has reduced and Durga Puja has mostly emerged as a community festival.
MahashashthiOn this day Goddess Durga arrives to the mortal world from her heavenly abode, accompanied by her children. She is welcomed with much fanfare amidst the beats of dhak. Unveiling the face of the idol is the main ritual on this day. Kalaparambho, the ritual performed before the commencement of the puja precedes Bodhon, Amontron and Adibas.
Mahasaptami Saptami is the first day of Durga puja. Kola Bow or Nabapatrika is given a pre-dawn bath. This is an ancient ritual of worshiping nine types of plants. They are together worshiped as a symbol of the goddess. The main Saptami Puja follows Kalparambho and Mahasnan.
Mahaastami The day began with a recital of Sanskrit hymns in community puja pandals as thousands of devotees offered anjali to the goddess. Kumari Puja or the worship of little girls as the mother goddess was a special part of the rituals observed in a number of traditional and household pujas. As the day wore on, it was time for the important Sandhi Puja, which marks the inter-linking of the Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami.
Mahanavami This is the concluding day of Durga Puja. The main Navami puja begins after the end of Sandhi Puja. The Navami Bhog is offered to the goddess. This is later partaken as prasad by the devotees.
DashamiAfter the three days of Puja, in Dashami , in the last day, a tearful farewell is offered to the Goddess. Most of the community pujas postpone the farewell as long as possible and arrange a grand send-off. The images are carried in processions around the locality and finally is immersed in a nearby river or lake. Vijaya Dashami is an event celebrated all over the country.

Some More Bangla practice...
Nomaskar. Apni kaemon acchen? So everyone, I just realized my last phrases post was all in Bangla script and if you didn't know the script it would be very confusing. Thus, this post will be for them transliterated. I'm also going to break down the words for some Grammar points.
Shakkhatkar ebong shambhashon = Meeting and Greeting
Shakkhatkar ebong shambhashon = Meeting and Greeting
- So this sentance is pretty easy, we have Shakkhatkar which means meeting. Then the word Ebong which means and. Next the word Shambhashon which means greeting.
Chorchar Jonno kicchu shobtho= Phareses to practice.
- Word order in Bengali is much different then in english. The word Chorchar means practice. Jonno which literally means for. Kicchu means some. And Shobtho means words. So in Bengali we say Practice for some words.
Here are some Everyday Common Words.
haan-yes
na-no
doya kore-please
dhonnobad-Thank you
Dhonnobad jannahorre proyjon nei.- no need for thanks (don't mention it)
Khoma Korben-excuse me
Ami Dokhita-I'm sorry
Shobho shakal-good morning
shobho shondha- good evening
Small Sample Diolouge:
Kajol:Shobo Shakal Kaki-ma. Apni kaemon acchen?
(Good Morning Aunty. How Are you?)
Kaki-ma: Ami bhalo acchi, dhonobad. Kajol, apni ki hindi bolen?
(I'm fine. Kajol do you speak hindi?)
Kajol: han kaki-ma, Ami matro olpo olpo hindi bolte pari.
(Yes Aunty, I can only speak a little Hindi)
I Hope You Enjoyed this lesson, next one comming shortly! Khoda Hafez ;)

Many people have never heard of Bengali. As I have said before, It is one of the most spoken langauges in the world. Maybe not as high as French or Chinese. But it is the 6th or 7th most spoken lanaguge. Bengali is the second most spoken langauge in India, after Hindi/Urdu. It is also the main lanaguge of Bangladesh.
